Snow Hill

The original Georgian houses in this area were considered by officious city councillors to be slums which needed to be demolished to make way for modern housing. A total of 210 properties were scheduled for demolition. The lawyers defending the council argued that the properties were no longer fit to live in and that access to these houses was poor with paths and steps. The lawyers for the objectors of this destruction found that the properties were sound and well-built but could do with some maintenance. Apparently the heritage issue was not even mentioned. Much of housing was demolished except for a few characterful buildings in Dover Place. If the Georgian houses were still here today just imagine what they would be worth?
