Turtle Dove

The European Turtle Dove is small pretty pigeon mainly found in woodland areas of south and east England. The birds are summer visitors to the UK but they make a perilous migration to sub-Saharan Africa for the winter. In their journey huge numbers are shot passing through Mediterranean countries and coupled with a loss of habitat they are considered vulnerable to extinction. The Turtle Dove is famously mentioned in the Christmas Song The Twelve Days of Christmas ‘On the second day of Christmas my true love sent to me two turtle doves...’
