This Magic Square is a stone carving by Josep Subirachs found on the Passion façade of the Sagrada Família, Barcelona. Inspired by Albrecht Dürer’s painting Melencolia I (1514), the numbers in this magic square add up to 33, horizontally, vertically and diagonally. The significance of 33 is that it is the age Jesus died. Magic squares have been recorded in ancient China and others have been found in Indian, Egyptian, Arab and Greek cultures but their use is not fully understood.
