Sator Rotas
In this Latin palindrome the words read the same forwards, backwards, vertically and horizontally. The two earliest examples have been discovered in Pompeii, in a private bathroom and near the amphitheatre. It is thought that the Sator Square is probably the earliest Christian inscription dating from the 1st century. The obvious meaning would have been Jesus’ Parable of the Sower in Matthew 13:3-9 when He likened the spreading of the word of the kingdom of God to a farmer who sows seeds.
