Jacob's Ladder
Based on one of the angels ascending a ladder on the front of Bath Abbey.
In 1499 the Bishop of Bath and Wells, Oliver King, had a vision of angels ascending and descending by a ladder to Heaven, as in Jacob’s dream in Genesis. Nearby was an olive tree supporting a crown and a voice said: Let an Olive establish the Crown and let a King restore the Church. Thus, the dream inspired him to rebuild the Abbey church and incorporate the dream into its design.
