Dr William Turner was born 500 years ago in 1508. Known as the father of English Botany and the Dean of Wells, Dr Turner lived in the Old Deanery during the years 1551-54 and 1560-64. He published 'A New Herball', the first major book about plants to be written in English. The Deanery Garden, revived by local volunteers, contains plants and trees described by Dr Turner in his writings. This design is based on one of them.
