This design is based on a rune stone found at Ardre Church in Gotland, Sweden. The stone known as Ardre III shows intertwined serpents framing a human figure. The reverse side of this stone shows a single serpent. Runic text is engraved on the edge of both sides. The stones found at Ardre are dated between the 8th and 11th centuries. Rune stones or picture stones are ornate stones carved with images including boats, people, animals and serpents. The greatest concentration of them can be found in Gotland.
