Visitors to a shrine in Medieval times would often carry away a souvenir of their pilgrimage; an Ampulla (small flask) containing holy water. This design is based on the decoration from a 13th c. ampulla from Canterbury Cathedral. King Henry II said “will no-one rid me of this troublesome priest?” before Becket was murdered. The design depicts St Thomas Becket with two of the four knights who murdered the saint whilst he was praying in front of the Cathedral’s altar.
