Inscription: YOUNG LADIES ARE DELICATE PLANTS - JANE AUSTIN
Based on a contemporary engraving of Jane Austin (1775-1817) set against the Rectory at Steventon in Hampshire where she lived the first 25 years of her life. The quote is from Jane's novel Emma which is about a wealthy and elegant young woman living with her father who meddles in the romantic lives of those closest to her.
The quote found in Emma, Volume II chapter 16 is in the context of the line: "I am very sorry to hear, Miss Fairfax, of your being out this morning in the rain. Young ladies should take care of themselves. Young ladies are delicate plants. They should take care of their health and their complexion. My dear, did you change your stockings?"
