I would like to thank Andrew Swift for his help and guidance to help make this walk varied and interesting. Andrew is a historian who has researched the many facets of Bath and two of his books, shown below, have contributed to the narrative of this walk. You can purchase these directly from www.akemanpress.com (with no postage in the UK) or they can be bought at Topping & Co shown on the map.

Unusual features to look out for in Bath

Ghost Signs - which are mentioned a lot in this walk. These are faded advertisements for businesses that have long since disappeared. They are a reminder of a previous era and only a handful of the 150 or so found in Bath are mentioned in this walk. In 1766 hanging signs were banned and so the smooth surface of ashlar stone made an ideal surface for signwriting. On some, the words are clear, others are muddled and less fortunate ones are fading away. When walking around other parts of town remember to look up!

False Windows - As you walk around Bath you may notice that some of the Georgian houses have false windows. This could be a result of preserving symmetry or amendments to the window tax. The subject of window tax is very complicated. It was introduced in 1696 before any of the buildings on this walk were built. However, by the mid-1800's a number of later amendments regarding their size and positioning did result in some windows being adapted or filled in.
