The Ship's Wheel
The design is based on the ship’s wheel from the famous sailing clipper Cutty Sark. The wheel was large, measuring nearly two metres in diameter. The ship, designed to last 20 years, was launched on 23rd November 1869. She sailed in the China tea trade over the next decade and was one of the fastest clippers - best run was 666 km in 24 hours. Extensive conservation work which was begun in 2006 has returned the Cutty Sark to her former glory and she is on permanent display in a dry dock in Greenwich, London.
