Our Countryside - Wren
The Wren is one of the UK’s most abundant breeding birds. Despite its tiny size (6-10cm in length) it has a very powerful voice which is what will let you know one is nearby. Brown in colour their appearance is distinctive as it has a tail that is cocked sharply upwards. They are found everywhere from woodland, farmland, moorland and gardens where there is an abundance of insects and spiders. Breeding takes place in early spring with males establishing territories by building a selection of domed nests for females to consider. Up to seven eggs are laid which will hatch and fledge about a month later.
